Financial aid announced for Canarian residents in Cuba

MADRID, Spain.- The Government of Canary Islands announced a new humanitarian aid program aimed at Canarians and their descendants who live in precarious conditions in Cuba, Argentina and Venezuela. This initiative, called “Sentir Canario”, seeks to meet the basic needs of the affected citizens, including food, medicines and, in serious cases, surgical interventions.

The “Sentir Canario” program focuses on three countries that have received significant Canarian emigration during the last century. The Directorate General of Emigration will be in charge of distributing these aids, which seek to mitigate the difficult living conditions faced by many of the emigrants and their descendants in these countries.

“Granting of direct financial aid to finance essential surgical interventions and vital treatments due to their extremely serious situation, or to cover basic needs such as food or medicines,” states the official website of the Government of the Canary Islands.

According to reports Europa Press, The total budget allocated for the current year amounts to 170,398 euros. Of this amount, 85,000 euros will be allocated exclusively to Cuba, the country that concentrates a large part of the Canarian diaspora. This amount will be distributed in two main modalities: 75 grants of 200 euros each, aimed at people over 80 years of age, and 350 grants of a general nature.

As for the application process, residents of Cuba and Argentina must send their requests via email to [email protected]. In Venezuela, however, applications can be made in person at the Delegation of the Government of the Canary Islands in Caracas.

In addition to this humanitarian support, the Government of the Canary Islands has approved an additional budget for the descendants of Canarians who decide to return to the islands. Aid for Returned Migrants It aims to cover basic needs during the first year after returning and is aimed at those who, after living abroad for at least four years, find themselves in a precarious socio-economic situation.

To access this aid, beneficiaries must meet a series of requirements, including holding Spanish nationality, having been born in the Canary Islands or being a first-degree descendant of Canarians, and being registered in a municipality on the islands. In addition, the family unit must not exceed the Spanish Interprofessional Minimum Wage on a monthly basis.
