The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Daniel Filmus, and his Defense counterpart, Jorge Taiana, reviewed the progress in the construction of three multidisciplinary laboratories at the Antarctic bases Orcadas, San Martín and Esperanzathe march of the Antarctic Summer Campaign and the deployment of scientific personnel in the bases of the white continent, it was officially reported today.
The new 120-square-meter multidisciplinary laboratories, along with new shelters on the Vega and Cerro Nevado islands near the Marambio base, will be built this year and are part of the first stage of the “Multidisciplinary Antarctic Laboratories” project, promoted by the Ministry of Science, the Argentine Antarctic Institute (IAA), the Joint Antarctic Command (Cocoantar) and the General Manuel N. Savio Foundation.
Likewise, the ministers followed up on the supercomputer acquired last month by the Ministry of Science, which will be installed in the National Meteorological Service (SMN) building, dependent on Defense.

The equipment was purchased from Lenovo by a value of 885 million pesos and will be installed in the SMN Computer Center, where the space adaptation works will be carried out for a cost of 265 million pesos that will be financed by Defense.
Its use will be open to the entire Science and Technology System, “which represents an important contribution to science, technology and national innovation”, they highlighted.
The supercomputer, which will provide calculation services using state-of-the-art technology, is 40 times more powerful than Huayra Muyu, the most powerful computer installed today in the country and used by the SMN to make its operational forecast.
These initiatives are registered within the framework of the important trajectory of joint work between the MINCyT and the Ministry of Defense.

The four defense science and technology agencies are: the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the Institute of Scientific and Technical Research for Defense (Citedef) and the Naval Hydrographic Service (SHN)are members of the Inter-Institutional Council of Science and Technology (CICyT) that in October 2022 met at the Antarctic base of Marambio.
At once, These organizations are part of the 1,000 Doctors Program that allows professionals to enter the SMN, IGN, Citedef and SHN.
In addition, within the framework of the Federal Program “Equip Science”, these organizations are beneficiaries of technology equipment that will allow them to carry out their research projects more efficiently.
Y through the Federal Program “Build Science” works will be launched in the H building of Citedef and the laboratories in the three Antarctic bases for the Joint Antarctic Command (Cocoantar).
