Filipe Toledo was the last Brazilian to qualify for the round of 16 of the Olympic surfing tournament, which is being held on Teahupo’o beach in Tahiti. In the final on Sunday night (28), Brasília time, he won the repechage heat against New Zealander Billy Stairmand by 17:00 to 14:00, with a score of 9.67 as his best score.
The Olympic surfing round of 16 clashes are scheduled to begin on Monday afternoon (29). Filipe Toledo faces Japanese surfer Reo Inaba in the second round of this phase.
Heat number 5 will feature a clash between three-time world champion Gabriel Medina and Japanese athlete Kanoa Igarashi. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Medina and Igarashi faced each other in the semifinals, with the Japanese athlete winning, who would later become an Olympic silver medalist.
The sixth round of the round of 16 in Teahupo’o will feature a duel between João Chianca, known as Chumbinho, and Moroccan Ramzi Boukhiam. If they advance, Medina and Chumbinho will face each other in the quarterfinals.
In the women’s tournament, the round of 16 is scheduled for early Monday evening, also in Brasília time. Tatiana Weston-Webb will participate in the sixth heat against the American Caitlin Simmers, current leader of the world surfing championship.
In the seventh heat, Brazilians Tainá Hinckel and Luana Silva will face each other for a place in the quarterfinals.
According to the Olympic surfing schedule, competitions are expected to end on Tuesday (30), with the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. If sea or weather conditions are not favorable, the competition window will remain open until August 5.
