A total of 24 representatives of the ex-Concertación questioned the project announced by the DC senators Ximena Rincon Y Matthias Walker, which proposes lowering the quorum for the reform of the current Constitution to 4/7, a proposal that obtained transversal support in Chile Vamos. In a statement, faces of the former coalition pointed out that the initiative is “an extemporaneous fiction of the right.”
“The new Constitution that is going to be plebiscitated is the result of a unique democratic and participatory process in our history. Never before has a Political Constitution had such a democratic origin as the new Constitution that we will vote on”, indicated the figures of the ex-Concertación, among whom are the DC senators Yasna Provoste Y Francisco Huenchumilla.

“There are only two alternatives available under the Constitutional Agreement of November 15, 2019, the constitutional reform carried out and the Plebiscite of October 25, 2020: Approve or Reject the text of the new constitution proposed by the Constitutional Convention for the plebiscite of October 4 September,” they added.
“There is no third alternative because it was not raised in the constitutional reform that made the exit plebiscite possible. Consequently, plan B is a mirage and has no legal or political foundation,” the signatories emphasized.
Along these lines, they indicated that the reform that seeks to lower the quorum for the reform, “is an extemporaneous fiction of the right that has already agreed to vote for the Rejection of the new constitutional text, and that confuses the country, allows it to recover its veto power, and be prone to change, but as long as the central elements of the 1980 constitution are maintained”.
“Changing the quorums to reform the current constitution of the dictatorship implies leaving said constitution subsisting, regarding which the citizenry overwhelmingly expressed itself against in the October 2020 plebiscite,” they added.
The proposal and the support of the right
The disputed proposal was presented last week by DC senators Ximena Rincón and Matías Walker, in addition to the independent Peter Araya.
“We made a call to push the necessary reforms, whether they are approved or rejected. The current constitution has locks, we have to change it and that is why 80% of the citizens voted to do it, but the Convention wants to maintain those same locks for four years. Rincón pointed out at the time.
“We hope that the government commits itself to profound changes, even when Chilean men and women say no to the CC’s proposal. Everything is not over with the exit plebiscite,” he added.
Meanwhile, from Chile Vamos – a coalition that has already defined its support for the Rejection – they made a transversal support for the initiative.
Senator and President of RN, Francisco Chahuanindicated last week that “they already have us. We announced that we are going to support the reduction of the quorum to ensure a new Constitution for Chile,” he said. Third.
The senator Luciano Cruz Coke (Evópoli) stated that from their community they will support the proposal. “It seems to me that the quorum reduction provision that today, at least I commit to, from Evópoli points precisely to that direction, so we are going to join that indication,” he said.
For his part, the president of the UDI, Javier Macayawrote via Twitter: “Very well! All of Chile is up. First step to enable a new road. From the @udipopular We support this constitutional reform and commit support so that a new constitutional hope can be born that unites the country and does not divide it”.
