A serious accident in which a bus with dozens of passengers fell into an abyss while traveling from Managua to the Nicaraguan border area with Honduras, left 16 dead, of which 13 were Venezuelan nationals, the National Police reported.
The accident occurred Wednesday night on a sinuous slope known as “La Cucamonga”, located in the department (province) of Estelí, 170 kilometers north of Nicaragua.

Various sources who said they had been at the scene, and who preferred anonymity, affirmed that the bus was transporting Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants who were traveling without papers, a fact that the authorities have not yet denied or confirmed.
It is not known if the bus traveled routinely from Managua to the city of Jalapa, as its sign indicated, or if it was an exclusive trip for irregular immigrants.
The National Police published the official list of the deceased, of which 13 were of Venezuelan nationality and one Nicaraguan.
The two that are not yet identified, are presumed to have come from Venezuela.

Until now, the populations of the people who occupy the route between Managua and Jalapa have not disclosed information on the death of any of their inhabitants, nor have they been known of citizens looking for relatives injured after the accident at the Estelí hospital.
Due to its geographical location, Nicaragua is an obligatory step for people and merchandise that want to cross the American continent by land.
“La Cucamonga”, where this type of accident occurs periodically, is a section of the Pan-American Highway flanked by chasms and unstable walls, which cannot be avoided, and which connects the Nicaraguan border area with the rest of the country.
