The Council of Bogotá orTorgó the Civil Order of Merit José Acevedo y Gómez, in the Grand Cruz Grade, to the Foundation for the Research and Development of Special Education (FIDES)in recognition of half a century of struggle for rights, visibility and inclusion of people with cognitive disabilities in Colombia.
The ceremony was headed by Alejandro Escallón, president of Fidesand his sister María Elisa Escallón, who are in charge of this entity that was born five decades ago. Alejandro Escallón told the microphones of RCN Radio his thanks to the city for this recognition.

“Recognize the work of the FIDES Foundation that has been for 50 years a proactive voice of the value of the inclusion of people with disabilities in Bogotá and in all of Colombia,” said Oviedo.
The councilor stressed that Bogotá concluded the recent approval of Agreement 936 of 2024, which creates the figure of the Ombudsman’s Office with Disabilities in the District Educational System. This initiative seeks to eliminate stigmas in the classrooms and open real educational and labor opportunities for this population.
“Then the creation of this Ombudsman will allow fathers, mothers, caregivers and students with disabilities to have a point where they can put their complaints, highlight what educational institutions are, teachers or administrative directors who are exercising something that cannot happen,” he said.
Fides has not only been a pioneer in the organization of sporting and cultural events for people with disabilities, but it manages to transform imaginary and raise awareness about the importance of equity and respect for difference.
The decoration thus becomes a symbol of the gratitude of a city towards an institution that has managed to teach him to look with other eyes with different capacities.
