Only a week ago, Public Companies of Medellín (EPM) reached one of the most important technical milestones in Hidroituango: permanently cover the auxiliary diversion gallery (GAD), which caused the contingency in April 2018.
This step will allow progress in the work with which they seek to launch the megaproject this year. After nearly 4 years, the GAD was permanently plugged with concrete structures 23 meters long and 14 meters high. LThe start-up of this megaproject is considered by many to be fundamental, given that it will generate almost 20% of the country’s energy.

However, candidate Gustavo Petro made it clear that he has a different position regarding the Hidroituango project. During Gustavo Bolívar’s usual program called ‘Los Gustavos’, the candidate for the Historical Pact assured that in his opinion the best thing is to “unpack” this project.
“You have to examine the issue of the reservoir, Quintero also said that, you have to reach a conclusion. Is it better to unpack? I, without much technical knowledge, have thought that this is the best thing to do, unpack, that project really doesn’t work anymore, for speeding it up because of how they built the tunnels, because of how they built the reservoir, It does not seem that the best thing for the country is for Hidroituango to continue (…) The money has already been lost,” Petro said.
