Ten cultural spaces in the capital of São Paulo will host, starting this Wednesday (13), the 32nd edition of the MixBrasil Culture of Diversity Festival, the largest LGBTQIA+ cultural event in Latin America, which will have a program with in-person and online until the 24th. This year, the event pays homage to Canadian filmmaker Bruce LaBruce, an exponent of the independent scene, with the Ícone Mix award, an exhibition at the Museum of Image and Sound (IMS) and a screening of his film “The Intruder“.
The festival adopted the theme “It’s in the light that we find ourselves” and selected 93 films from 32 countries and 12 states. Offer the public contact with virtual reality works developed with artificial intelligence (AI), created in France, Finland, Poland, among other places. Those who do not enjoy immersive experiences or other languages can enjoy other attractions in the field of music, gamesliterature and performance, as well as parties.
In addition to the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS), the itinerary includes Cinesesc, Centro Cultural São Paulo (CCSP), Spcine Olido, Teatro Sérgio Cardoso, Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS), Biblioteca Mário de Andrade, Ocupação Artemisia/naUapi , Galeria Vermelho and Galeria Piege.
The event organizers also planned to include children in the program. For them, he designed the Growing with Diversity activity. Film buffs will be able to watch, at the opening of the festival, the feature film Avenida Beira-Marwinner of the Felix Prize at the Rio Festival and which tells the story of a 13-year-old girl who undergoes transformations after seeing a trans woman swimming in the sea.
Other highlights are the film Sebastianfrom the official selection of the Sundance Festival, and the work Emi Ofesigned by artist Igi Lola Ayedun and made entirely with artificial intelligence resources. The Brazilian sought to denounce the rights violations to which migrants, black people and LGBTQIA+ are subject. Already Bear, Deer, Cat and Other Animals allows us to sharpen our perspective on the animism of Amerindian peoples.
The festival’s director, André Fischer, comments that the curatorship, which he calls “transmedia”, sought to vary the languages of the productions and had to deal with the lack of resources to hold this year’s event, finding an alternative among collectives with whom he signed partnership. The scarcity of funds to carry out artistic-cultural projects was, as mentioned, something also present in the films, since many of the works shot last year were made possible thanks to the laws Paulo Gustavo (Complementary Law nº 195/2022) and Aldir Blanc (Law nº 14,017/2020), both aimed at the artistic class and which released amounts on an emergency basis, due to the covid-19 pandemic.
“There is both a generation that started young, in the 1990s, that today is already in another place, with feature films, alternative films, and a very strong generation, that came with this production using new technological resources – they do it with their cell phones. This year there are a lot of films made with cell phones”, he observes in relation to audiovisual directors.
As for the public that attends the event, Fischer says that it is made up of people who have already attended previous editions and a second group, interested in new developments in the technology market. The director recalls that he recently met with colleagues from all over the world, who highlighted older age as a characteristic of the public at the events they organize. “We have a renewed audience, one that has been attending for 30 years and, we cannot forget that, when we talk about LGBT+, we also have those represented by [sinal de] +, which is whoever is questioning, does not want to be conformed, to have their gender identities or sexual orientations conformed to a letter or a box”, he summarizes.
