The president of the Congress of the Republic, Fernando Rospigliosispoke this morning about Zaira Arias’ repeated claim to, in her capacity as accessory, occupy the seat of Congressman Guillermo Bermejo, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the crime of terrorism in the first instance.
The legislator for Fuerza Popular maintained that there is already a report from the Attorney General’s Office that has been submitted to the Legal Advisory Office to issue a statement “with that opinion and others, because opinions have also been collected from constitutionalists and lawyers who know this issue.”
“The procedures of Congress are like that and we must abide by them. Congress is not going to accept blackmail or violence or shouting or kicking or whining, no, that is not going to be accepted here. We are going to strictly abide by what the regulations say and what the law says; if the congressional procedures are like that we must abide by them,” he remarked.
“As I have said before, Congress is going to make the corresponding decision in accordance with the regulations and the law, that will happen in any case and following the established procedures. The National Election Jury will be able to make a decision after Congress says what to do. This is a matter for Congress, after it makes a decision, that will be transferred to the National Election Jury and any State institution that must receive that resolution,” he added.
“We are in representation week so it is difficult to convene the Board of Directors or other bodies until the following week when the report from the legal office of Congress is received, and the corresponding bodies will make a decision on the matter, but I insist, here no one is going to impose on Congress,” he said.
The head of the Legislature was also consulted about the use of a Parliament chamber in the rally organized by Fuerza Popular to launch the presidential candidacy of Keiko Fujimori, a fact for which an investigation has been initiated at the level of the Special Electoral Jury of Pacasmayo for alleged violation of the principle of neutrality.
According to the senior officer of Congress, Giovanni Forno, he was on vacation when the events occurred and was replaced by parliamentary director general Jaime Abensur, candidate for deputy for the orange party in the 2026 general elections.
Asked about this official, Rospigliosi indicated: “I assume that he has made the corresponding defenses before the Special Electoral Jury, nothing more to say.”
