After knowing the results, Pereira declared at a press conference this Monday that the Frente Amplio formula, together with sociologists, political scientists and statisticians, evaluated the data and designed a strategy for the runoff on November 24.
The strategy will be officially structured tomorrow, Tuesday, in a secretariat meeting, followed by a political discussion with the campaign command and the presidency of the Frente Amplio, in which the steps to follow will be established. Pereira emphasized the need to “place the two country projects clearly on the table” to incline citizens towards the proposal led by Yamandú Orsi, his party’s candidate. In this sense, he highlighted the stability of the community, which since 1999 has maintained more than 40% of the electorate and has governed for three periods.
Regarding the way to achieve a victory in the second round, Pereira affirmed that “ordinary militancy” will be essential and will be complemented by the visit of key figures of the Frente Amplio throughout the country. He also anticipated a preponderant role for the formula made up of Orsi and Carolina Cosse, compared to Álvaro Delgado and Valeria Ripoll of the multicolor coalition.
Comparison with the previous election and focus on the debate
Pereira referred to the last election, highlighting that the Frente Amplio reached the second round with an advantage in favor of the ruling coalition. However, he recalled how the transfer of votes made it possible to shorten that distance. “That election ended with a very important transfer of votes from the coalition to the Frente Amplio,” he said, predicting a similar growth in this instance. Although he acknowledged that the votes must be “worked,” Pereira expressed confidence in a possible increase in support for the Frente Amplio in this second round.
Asked about the presidential debate, tentatively scheduled for November 17, Pereira indicated that Yamandú Orsi is prepared and that the details will be adjusted between the campaign commands. He also stressed that the competition will face “two country projects” and pointed out that the Frente Amplio will seek to emphasize issues such as social justice and social security, with a view to a nation model that has a significant majority of citizen support.
