Fernando Costa, president of the Bolivian Football Federation, tried to put cold cloths to the rumors of a possible suspension of the Closing Tournament. On Tuesday afternoon it was leaked that the 16 clubs would meet with the FBF to discuss the issue, and Costa confirmed it.
“We will see to what extent this strike develops. If it is going to be indefinite or 48 hours, etc. We are going to analyze all of this in the Council of the Professional Division and based on that we are going to act accordingly,” Costa said.
On the possibility of suspending the championship and leaving it unfinished, he mentioned: “The idea is that we conclude the tournament, however contingencies of this type have been contemplated in the regulations”.
About the meeting, he stated: “The council is scheduled for the 21st of this month (Friday), in Cochabamba; it will be in person”, but he was cautious when anticipating any decision that could be made. “It is premature to issue any criteria. Let’s hope that the negotiations can advance and God willing, that strike will not take place,” express.
Soccer in Bolivia had similar situations, and perhaps this will help to simplify the debate in the Council, Costa stated. “We have already had a similar experience in 2019, so we hope that we can solve it in the best way and that the championship can conclude. There are television contracts,” he pointed out.
The date 24 will be played normally until the same Friday. The dates 25 to 30 are the ones that would be compromised. The Strongest, Bolívar, and Always Ready have clear chances to be champions, while the fight for relegation involves five teams.
