Brazilian cinema is experiencing a historic moment. Actress Fernanda Torres received this Monday (06), in Los Angeles, United States, the Golden Globe award for best actress in the Drama category.
The award, given to a Brazilian for the first time, is a recognition of Fernanda’s work in the film I’m Still Here. In the production, she plays lawyer Eunice Paiva, widow of Rubens Paiva, a federal deputy murdered by the military dictatorship in 1971.
Fernanda competed with big Hollywood stars such as Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Pamela Anderson and Kate Winslet.
25 years ago, Fernanda Montenegro, mother of Fernanda Torres, competed in the same category for her performance in Central Brazil. She didn’t win, but the film won the Golden Globe in the best foreign film category.
“This is proof that art lasts in life, even during difficult times that Eunice Paiva went through and with so many problems in the world today. This is a film that helped us think about how to survive in times like these. So , for my mother, for my family, for my children and for everyone, thank you very much to the Golden Globes”, said Fernanda, during the acceptance speech.
Both I’m Still Here as Central Brazil were directed by filmmaker Walter Salles.
This year, in the category of best foreign film, the Golden Globe went to the French production Emilia Pérez.
