It was on June 11, 2020, on Teniente Balcázar street, in the Parque Urbano area, when the femicide, eager to sexually abuse his cousin, but unable to do so, used a penknife and attacked his aunt, mother of Melissa and It caused multiple injuries that caused his death.

The subject also attacked Melissa causing head injuries, but in the face of desperate cries for help, he miraculously saved his life.

Since that day Melissa, not only endured the blow of having seen her mother die and of suffering to recover from the wounds, but also went on pilgrimage in search of justice in which she believed so that the femicide be sentenced to the maximum penalty established by the standard, that is, 30 years without the right to pardon.

Yesterday, Melissa and her relatives attended the 8th sentencing court made up of judges Angélica Sánchez, José René Quezada and Charlin Tapia, who had set to pass sentence after more than two years of the tragedy.

The judges issued a sentence declaring Luis Fernando Flores Paniagua guilty of femicide, to serve in a psychiatric center in Sucre, not in a prison. The femicide is currently detained in the Palmasola prison, but will have to be transferred to the Pacheco de Sucre center.

He swore to kill me and I’m scared

Survivor Melissa Castro, daughter of fatal victim Lilia Flores Medina, said she was left shocked with the sentence issued by the judges, from whom he expected a real ruling

“I feel anger, uncertainty, helplessness,” said Melissa Castro, after the ruling where she saw her mother’s murderer all the time and who also tried to kill her in her own home.

Melissa always attended all the hearings and the oral trial. She always maintained that she suffers from having seen how my mother was cruelly murdered, “and I was miraculously saved.” Now, “I pilgrim every day seeking justice; I know that he has sworn to go free to kill me and fulfill his objective, justice will be responsible for everything if it succeeds”.

While the Prosecutor’s Office presented the evidence, the accused, through his lawyer, during the process He stated that he suffers from mental disorders. However, psychological studies reveal that he is a fit person, but with signs of high danger. For this, the Prosecutor’s Office requested 30 years in prison without the right to pardon.

Survivor Melissa Castro said that, unfortunately, her cousin Luis Fernando Flores Paniagua lived with his mother in Switzerland where he studied, but he came to her house where planned to kill her mother and herBut he was miraculously saved.

Lawyer Angélica Zapata, who defends the victim, regretted the ruling. “That is a mockery, an act of true injustice,” he said. He stated that this Friday the sentence will be read and that an appeal will be filed.

The jurist assured that, during the oral trial, the president of the court showed bias in favor of the femicide and his defense. “That is why we denounced before the Judicial Council. Representatives of the Council came to participate in the trial, however the judges resisted and only allowed them to pass one day. Then they declared reservation of the entire trial. “The worst was when the victim, Melissa, tried to speak and was forbidden, and this is a clear bias, which does not happen with the perpetrator of the crime,” said the lawyer.

Zapata affirmed that, according to the court, the femicide cannot be charged, so although he was sentenced to 15 years, it is to be taken to the Pacheco de Sucre center.

19 femicides in Santa Cruz

One of the latest cases to be discovered is the tragic death of the 21-year-old, Viviana Ojeda Vargas.

The main suspect for the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office is his concubine, a subject who worked as a processor on the outskirts of the Mayor’s Office. He is on the run and is wanted by the police.
