Shakira Rossana Morales Rey was 20 years old and had been reported missing on May 20. She was found dead on Tuesday the 7th by the Paysandú Police. That same day, at night, the neighbors set fire to the precarious home of his 36-year-old stepfather, who confessed to the murder. Between that house and hers, in a shared property, they found her buried.

The case shocked the humble Curupí neighborhood of the Sanducera capital, which still hasn’t gotten over its astonishment at the femicide and at the way Shakira, as everyone called her, was killed.

Justice on Wednesday charged the man with the crime of homicide, especially aggravated by femicide, at the request of the prosecutor in the Cecilia Irigoyen case. The defendant has a record for reception.

The inhabitants of that area to the northwest of the city near the Uruguay river and the La Curtiembre stream, in which houses from the Five-Year Housing Plan and others made of wood and sheet metal alternate, assured that in recent years they had gained in tranquility and calm. , and that even at night they could walk through its streets without major inconveniences.

For this reason, the fact that a woman was found murdered and buried in a hole 80 centimeters deep, generated shock and commotion. “She had never seen anything like this,” said Jesús, a neighborhood baker who has lived there for fifteen years. in conversation with The Observerreported that he has known the boy – Shakira’s stepfather – for “many years” and that he would never have suspected that he would do something like that.

“I crossed him and we greeted each other. A day before I saw him with a cart carrying firewood. And these last days, he was walking around here as if nothing had happened, with his backpack and the radio as loud as possible, ”he continued. According to him he said to The ObserverPaysandú Police Chief Eduar Alvez, it is estimated that the young woman died in the early hours of May 21, shortly after her disappearance was reported.

“It touched deeply in the neighborhood,” Jesus stressed. Between him and his wife Ana they said that Shakira’s mother – an information also confirmed by the Police – moved to the P3 neighborhood (near Curupí) on May 15, and that since then the girl and her stepfather were left alone . “She beat us all; she left us surprised. This had never happened in Curupí, ”concurred Ana, who added that the murderer never had a permanent job and that she used drugs.

According to what was published by El Telégrafo, Shakira was known for wandering the streets selling books and Band-Aids.

“We are going to set the ranch on fire”

As soon as Tuesday night fell, and the Police took the arrested murderer -the troops had worked all day in the place-, the enraged neighbors set fire to the precarious buildings that occupied the homes of the man and Shakira, who lived in a kind of adjoining room to that of his murderer. Between the two houses, made of wood, nylon and sheet metal, was the hole.

“We are going to set the ranch on fire.” This is how the inhabitants of Curupí announced to the policemen when they were in full swing. And they complied. The flames – put out by firefighters after a 911 call – consumed everything: there were only a few charred poles, charred clothes, a shattered bible and the remains of kitchen utensils, shoes or medicine.

Javier, better known as Quico and who lives opposite the now burnt-out house, told The Observer that everything has been “not to believe”. “Imagine, she walked past my house. I found out when I came back from the mountain, that I went to look for firewood. When I arrived, everyone was here,” she recounted. The impact even took away his sleep. “I didn’t sleep all night,” she added.

Mobilization

While the detainee testified, a group of women demonstrated at the doors of the court to demand justice for Shakira and to denounce the femicides.

“We ask for justice because the mother made a fool of herself in the cemetery, that she fainted, that she had a heart attack. Do you see the mother here? No, she is not present. The mother or anyone. The only thing she wants is money and nothing else, ”said one of the protesters to Underlined.

“The only thing he did was use Shakira. And that is not done. Because mothers are in the good and the bad. If it were not so, the mother would be present here. And not leave her lying on her and drag her to the street like she did when she was 15 years old, ”she added.
