The Argentine Felipe Bergoglio, a relative of Pope Francis, signed until the end of the season with Castiglionese, from the Eccelenza category (fifth division), which is seeking promotion to Serie D.
Felipe Bergoglio, a center back born in 2004, became a famous character at the beginning of the season when he signed for Trentina, in Serie D, where he did not have many minutes.
The lack of prominence forced him to change scene and he ended up on loan at Castiglionese 1919, a team from a lower category, but with promotion aspirations and which is based in the region of Tuscany.
“The club officially presents its new defender: FELIPE BERGOGLIO,” he announced on his Instagram account.
The relationship between Felipe Bergoglio and the Pope, whose real name is Jorge Bergoglio, was born through Felipe’s grandfather, who is Francisco’s cousin.
The 20-year-old defender acknowledged in several interviews a few months ago that he did not know the Pope in person and that he was waiting for a private meeting at the holy see, in Vatican City.
He also revealed that rivals easily recognized his last name, something that caused several to sometimes ask him for a blessing.
Felipe Bergoglio grew up as a football player in the Club Social y Deportivo Lasallano (Argentina) youth team, until he reached the first team, where he played throughout the 2022 season and half of the following season.
