Federation rejects increasing criminalization against doctors and being branded as "gangsters"

From the Ministry of Health, the Public Ministry and the Ministry of the Interior, Justice and Peace, it was agreed to carry out visits and talks to fight “against mafias” dedicated to irregular collection, theft of medical products and illegal practice of medicine

The Venezuelan Medical Federation (FMV) rejected, on the morning of this Tuesday, June 7, the growing criminalization against the sector, after the actions of the Nicolás Maduro administration to prevent the theft and sale of supplies and surgical material from the public network. of health.

In a press conference, the president of the FMV, Douglas León Natera, stated that “we do not accept this alleged criminalization that he wants to make against the national medical union.”

He also made a “very formal claim to the national government to respect the national medical union,” which has “worked in hospitals during these 22 years of the Bolivarian government without supplies, without medicines or with very little medical-surgical material, solving problems.” .

The doctor also mentioned the covid-19 pandemic, which health personnel have faced “with very little biosecurity.” According to monitoring of NGO Monitor Health During the first quarter of 2022, in emergencies there were no masks or gloves 40% of the time, while the shortage of eye or face protection was located at 59%.

The Executive has promoted the term “hospital mafias” to refer to the theft of supplies that, in some cases, are donations from patients for operations. Such is the case of doctors Rafael Andrés Briceño Ventura and María Inés Elías, detained on Monday the 6th by the National Guard at the University Hospital of Maracaibo (Zulia state) after supplies for an operation were found in the specialist’s vehicle.

“She (María Inés Elías) does not hurt them, in these thirteen days, she gathered what was needed, plus what we had. We ask God, we ask the Government, to help us by releasing the doctor, they took away our hope that my sister-in-law would be operated on and it is not fair that she go through that thanks to the government and the National Guard,” said one of the relatives of Claudia Salónthe woman who was going to be operated on with said supplies.

About 50 doctors have been arrested according to the FMV. León Natera cited the cases of arrests in the states of Apure, Trujillo, Lara and Anzoátegui, “without evidence, without accusations, without crimes, violating due process and forced to appear in court without cause.”

On May 26, Nicolas Maduro proposed appointing “secret inspectors” with the aim of controlling and helping public hospitals. “I’m not saying in all of them, I’m not generalizing, but they exist (…) they ask patients to buy things outside and they go to the store, pick them up and sell them outside, they exist and we have verified it.”

From the Ministry of Health, the Public Ministry and the Ministry of the Interior, Justice and Peace it was also agreed to carry out visits and talks to fight “against mafias” dedicated to irregular collection, theft of medical products and illegal practice of medicine.

Regarding these remarks, León Natera said that the directors of the assistance centers are the administrators of the resources that the Government deposits in their personal bank accounts “and they manage them at their discretion.” He also recalled the case of the former Minister of Health Eugenia Sader, accused by the Public Ministry together with her son for the diversion of 1,500 million dollars in hospital facilities.

He also made reference to the case of the former president of Social Security, Carlos Rotondaro, for the embezzlement of 100 million dollars and, in addition, sanctioned by the governments of the United States and Panama. “And what happened to the resources for the high-cost medicine program announced by the government. Nothing is known about that.”
