The Minister of Ports and Airports, Márcio França, said that he will limit the operational capacity of Santos Dumont airport, in Rio de Janeiro. A reduction in the volume registered in 2022 will be established. This year, the number of passengers should be below 10 million. The goal is to try to increase the number of flights at Tom Jobim International Airport, Galeão, which has had a drop in recent years.
“We are going to resume Galeão’s role! This is our commitment demonstrated since the beginning of the Lula government. It should be clarified that the Secretariat of Civil Aviation is preparing studies with possible solutions to increase the number of passengers at the airport”, said the minister on his social networks.
França guaranteed that he will present other solutions at the meeting with the governor of the state, Cláudio Castro, and the mayor, Eduardo Paes, scheduled for the 24th of this month. Also through a social network, the mayor of Rio said that there are risks in the “absurd amount” of flights that Santos Dumont has received.
“I think Santos Dumont is charming and easily accessible. There’s only one problem: it’s not an international airport. And a city like ours cannot do without an international airport with several international connections. They’ve already done a lot of evil things against Rio. We cannot allow this anymore. This is a crucial dispute for Rio”.
