The Brics Summit, scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2025, had its visual identity announced this Friday (20). This visual communication project will have, as its main element, the Amazonian Samaúma tree – a work of nature that can reach 60 meters in height and 2 meters in diameter.
Such greatness earned this tree nicknames such as Stairway to Heaven, Mother of Trees and Guardian of the Forest. Ceiba pentandra is the name given to it by scientists. According to the federal government, having this tree at the forefront of the Brics 2025 visual identity is something that “translates the group’s objective”.
“The ability of Sumaúma to extract water from deep within the soil, even in times of drought, and share it with other plants, symbolizes cooperation and shared development. Sapopemas are also used for communication in the forest. The structure, combined with the amount of water accumulated in the trunk, once hit, creates a sound that echoes over long distances, which evokes the idea of connection and dialogue”, explains the Social Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.
In 2025, Brazil will assume the presidency of BRICS, a bloc originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and which was expanded by the participation of Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Ethiopia. This is the second time that Brazil hosts the meeting. The first was 15 years ago.
BRICS
Born from an acronym (a word formed by initials) coined in 2001 by Jim O’Neil, then chief economist at the investment bank Goldman Sachs, Brics was born as Bric, which also means brick in English.
At the time, the economist was trying to designate emerging economies with high growth potential in the 21st century. Only in 2006, the four countries formed a formal discussion forum, at the Meeting of Foreign Ministers organized on the sidelines of the 61st General Assembly of the United Nations, in September of that year. year.
In 2014, integration increased, with the announcement of the creation of the New Development Bank (NBD), also known as the Brics Bank, at the summit meeting in Fortaleza, in July of that year.
Formally founded in 2015, the institution finances infrastructure and sustainable growth projects in member countries. In eight years, the NDB lent US$33 billion for 100 infrastructure projects, renewable energy, transportation, among other initiatives.
Brics formed a reserve fund with the aim of preserving the financial stability of member countries in times of crisis. A reserve of resources to be used as aid in case of need, this fund was already established with a contribution of US$ 100 billion.
