Leaving the Samambaia terminal, Communication intern Yasmin Lara Orilio Moreira (16) takes around an hour to get to the 114 Sul station. With the expansion of the metro, Yasmin’s journey will take approximately 40 minutes. She is optimistic about the change, but highlights the need to increase the number of wagons, in addition to expanding the stations.
“I believe that, with the expansion of the subway, the trains will become more crowded. If there is no increase in trains towards Samambaia, it is likely that there will be daily overcrowding in the carriages. Other than that, another possible change will be to make it easier to return to my house by bus”, says Yasmin.
The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) announced this Monday (6) the expansion of the subway section that passes through Samambaia, with approved financing in the amount of R$ 444.5 million to the government of the Federal District, as part of the Novo PAC project.
The expansion will be on the semi-buried permanent road, for 3.6 kilometers, from the current Samambaia terminal. Two new stations (numbers 35 and 36) will be implemented close to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) and the Olympic Center. The construction of three viaducts with pedestrian crossings is also planned, in addition to the creation of four walkways.
“The project approved by BNDES brings benefits that add improvements to the quality of life of the DF population, a commitment of President Lula’s government. The expansion of the metro will increase the supply of rail transport, contributing to the reduction of congestion, travel time, the number of accidents and pollutant emissions by around 7.8 thousand tons of CO2 per year”, stated Aloizio Mercadante, president of BNDES, in a note published by the bank.
BNDES estimates that the new section will carry an additional 9,840 passengers per day. Currently, 160 thousand passengers currently use the Federal District subway.
