On March 6, members of the Colombian Federation of Educators (Fecode) met with President Gustavo Petro and the recently appointed Minister of Education, Aurora Vergara Figueroa.

At the meeting, they reflected on the concerns raised by the union and agreed changes to the sector.
At the end of the meeting, the minister reported that the Government listened to the concerns raised by the federation, within those: “the need for more students to enter the education system in quality conditions, the importance of creating spaces for joint dialogue and protecting the lives of teachers in the territories, as well as achieving territorial equity”.
He added that they reviewed the issues related to the educational basket and the reform of the General Participation System (SGP).
Vergara also assured that “They are going to advance in the process of the reform and establish the spaces for dialogue necessary to reach agreements”.

For his part, Carlos Rivas, president of Fecode, He said that they raised “the need for the reform to the SGP to appear in the National Development Plan (PND), with the modification to articles 356 and 357.”
Faced with the above, Rivas added that “President Petro agrees with reforming the SGP, but asks that it be done in the second semester, to include health, drinking water and basic sanitation.”
Additionally, he stressed that “the president promised to respect Law 91 of 1989 and, therefore, in the health reform the teachers’ regime appears as an exceptional one, until the problems of the hospital network are solved”.
