Research by the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban) shows that the credit portfolio in the country is expected to grow 8.5% in 2025. Last December, the expectation of the entity was a growth of 9% of credit in the current year. The data were released on Monday (17).
In 2024, credit growth was 10.9%, according to the Central Bank.
“The result reflects the worsening of the economic scenario, expecting a higher inflation and, consequently, higher interest rates also throughout the year. The effective performance of credit will depend on the fiscal scenario and other relevant variables that may change the current perspective, ”said FEBRABAN’s director of economics, prudential regulation and risks, Rubens Sardenberg.
The survey, made with executives from 21 banks, between February 5 and 10, also points out that most respondents (76.2%) said the Selic rate rose in addition to 14.25% in 2025.
The expectation for the exchange rate is slight depreciation throughout the year, with the dollar reaching $ 5.95 until September. In the previous survey, the interviewees saw that the exchange rate would be close to the level of $ 6.
As for inflation, most (47.6%) of respondents understand that inflation should be close to 5.5%. On the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), just over half (52.4%) of participants continues to project around 2% in 2025.
