FCU unaware of whereabouts of student Luis Yaguarate and calls for his release

Police raided the home of student leader Luis Yaguarate prior to his arrest. His whereabouts and the crimes he is accused of are unknown.

The Federation of Student Centers of the Central University of Venezuela (FCU) reported that the whereabouts of student Luis Yaguarate, who was arrested on the afternoon of Monday, August 26, after a raid on his residence in the state of Carabobo, are unknown.

Jesús Mendoza, president of the FCU, said that the status of his detention is also unknown and demanded his immediate release.

Yaguarate is a student representative to the University Council of the University of Carabobo and according to the complaint filed by the organization Defiende Venezuela, several police officers “dressed in black” entered the student’s home and arbitrarily arrested him without reporting the alleged crimes he is accused of.

The university counselor is a student of Education and is a member of the political party Un Nuevo Tiempo, in the Carabobo state team.

Yaguarate has already been arrested before. In June 2019, he appeared before the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigations Corps (CICPC) and remained at the police headquarters for three weeks.

The student was arrested during the student elections at the University of Carabobo, in which groups close to the government took over the headquarters of the Federation of University Centers of the university, despite not winning the elections.

The winning party evicted the leaders from the office and days later, Yaguarate received a summons from the CICPC to testify for alleged gender violence.
