FCU-UCV prepares mass to celebrate canonizations and asks to pray for political prisoners

The president of the FCU-UCV urged “those who are in power today” to “remember that the university is a fundamental pillar” and that “they have a commitment to the most disadvantaged, following the life and work of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and mother Carmen Rendiles.”

Student leaders from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) are preparing a mass of thanksgiving for the canonizations of the doctor José Gregorio Hernández and the nun Carmen Rendiles, the first Venezuelan saints, and asked that it be an occasion to pray for political prisoners.

During a press conference, the Federation called on Venezuelans who will attend to “ask for peace and democracy” in the country, in addition to “pray for the release of political prisoners.”

The Secretary of International Relations of the FCU, Miguelangel Borsegui, thanked the Vatican for canonizing Hernández, of whom he highlighted his “impeccable work within the Faculty of Medicine at the time”, and Rendiles, who – he noted – “exercised for many years” in education.

“Without a doubt we hope that this festival of holiness can serve not only as a bridge to make prayer a healthy exercise of devotion to these two saints, but also an exercise to pray for the release of political prisoners,” he said.

For his part, the president of the FCU-UCV, Miguelangel Suárez, stated that this October 25 the university “opens the doors to all Venezuelans with joy to celebrate” both saints.

The Eucharist will begin at 10:00 am in the Rectorate Square, where they estimate around 5,000 people can gather. They hope it will be “a space of reunion” to celebrate the Venezuelan saints, especially Hernández, as he is also the first “Ucevista saint.”

Furthermore, the student leader urged “those who are in power today” to “remember that the university is a fundamental pillar” and that “they have a commitment to the most disadvantaged, following the life and work of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and mother Carmen Rendiles.”

The Archdiocese of Caracas also called celebrations for this Saturday in each parish in the country starting at 10:00 am, after suspending the massive celebration at the Monumental Stadium of Caracas due to capacity problems, as they explained.
