Father's Day: Retail sector reduces sales expectations after elimination of Qatar 2022

With the elimination of Peru from the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the expectations of the retail sector for the campaign of the . According to the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL), the turnover for this celebration would register around S/ 2,500 million, which represents a 15% growth compared to the 2021 campaign, but would only show an advance of 95% of what it was sold in 2019.

“In 2021 our sector had already registered negative results, but for this year we hoped to improve these values ​​with the qualification of Peru to the World Cup, which was going to boost business. However, after the elimination, purchases are stopped”said the president of the Retail and Distribution Guild of the CCL, Leslie Passalacqua.

He estimated that these days there will be a greater flow of visitors in shopping centers now that there are no capacity restrictions or confinements; He also added that there would be greater consumption with the release of 100% of the CTS and withdrawal of funds from the AFPs.

Passalacqua pointed out that the Father’s Day campaign represents between 8% and 10% of the sector’s annual sales, an important campaign as much as Mother’s Day and Christmas, the two most representative of the year.

Regarding the average ticket, he specified that with the qualification for the World Cup, Peruvians planned to spend an amount of S/ 250, taking into account a greater participation of the entertainment, restaurant and liquor sectors; however, the expense could now be between S/ 180 to S/ 200.

Regarding the most demanded products, gifts related to technology, fashion and sports (in garments and accessories) would have more prominence in this campaign.

“In the case of technological products, a growth of 10% was estimated with the acquisition of Smart televisions, tablets and cell phones; however, these projections will change as they have not qualified for the World Cup. In that sense, businesses will develop other strategies, but they will not be able to exceed the estimates prior to the classification”noted the specialist.
