Father Edwing Román, one of the most critical religious of the Nicaraguan regime, rejected the 26-year prison sentence that the Nicaraguan justice system imposed on Monsignor Rolando Alvarez, Bishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa.

Through his Twitter account, Román highlighted that Ortega’s envy for “the pastors who are loved by their people” made him invent crimes against the also apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Estelí.
Alluding to the presidential couple who have openly declared “war” on the Catholic Church, the priest wrote a new tweet noting that “These two deranged, every day they overcome their own hatred.”
From his exile in the United States, Father Román called on the Nicaraguan rulers to repent. «Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo: Repent!».
More than 26 years in prison for Monsignor Álvarez
According to the sentence against Monsignor Álvarez, the dictatorship sentenced him to 26 years and four months for the crimes of undermining national integrity, spreading false news, aggravated obstruction of functions, disobedience and contempt of authority.
For the crime of undermining national integrity, the religious was sentenced to 15 years in prison, 5 years for the crime of spreading false news, another 5 years and 4 months for the crime of aggravated obstruction of functions, and 1 year for the crime of contempt of authority to the detriment of the State of Nicaragua.
In addition, he was sanctioned with an 800-day fine (56,461.15 córdobas or $1,555).
“The prison sentences imposed will be served successively: 26 years and 4 months in prison,” according to the sentence, which establishes that the bishop will remain in prison until April 13, 2049.

The bishop was scheduled to face trial on February 15, however it was brought forward after the hierarch refused to board a plane with 222 other prisoners.
In less than 48 hours the Nicaraguan dictatorship exiled political prisoners to the United States, sentenced Monsignor Álvarez and continued repression in the country.
