Father Edwing Román: «Our mother country is wounded by the bad children who plunder it»

Father Edwing Román, former pastor of the San Miguel Arcángel church in Masaya, lamented the wave of repression that Nicaraguans are experiencing at the hands of the Sandinista government.

“Our Mother Country is wounded in her body and soul by the bad sons who plunder her and who claim to govern,” said the priest, referring to the dictators Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

Through his official Twitter account, Román urged Nicaraguans to continue “fighting and praying” for the country. He added that “the country is not the dictatorship” of Ortega.

Román’s new statements take place in a context in which the regime has more than 200 political prisoners in the country’s different prisons, among them are nine priests, including Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, who served 18 days in prison.

So far in 2022, the Nicaraguan dictatorship has increased its wave of repression against Nicaraguans and the Catholic Church. To date he has condemned the priests Manuel Salvador Garciaparish priest of Nandaime and Monsignor Leonardo Urbina of Boaco, accusing them of common crimes.

Between August 30 and September 1, the Nicaraguan justice exhibited before the government propaganda media 27 political prisoners held in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, in Managua.

Despite the regime’s claims that the hostages’ conscience “has had their rights respected” and that they are in “good health,” their faces look gaunt and their physical appearance deteriorated, however, most opponents maintain their smile and head held high.

In the last appearance of the dictator Daniel Ortega, during the anniversary of the Nicaraguan Army, he ranted against Nicaraguans, the United States and private companies, but did not show any signs of wanting to free all political prisoners.
