About the World Cup
In 1956, Chile was awarded the venue for the 7th World Cup in 1962. Preparations and work began immediately, which included the modernization of the transportation system, telecommunications and sports infrastructure.
Work was progressing at great speed when in May 1960, one of the most devastating earthquakes in the history of mankind occurred in the city of Valdivia, almost completely destroying the south of our country. As a result, the organization of the championship had to readjust everything planned, including changing several cities that had been chosen to receive the teams.
Different entities, companies, municipalities and private contributions supported with financing so that the tournament venues were finally Santiago, Viña del Mar, Rancagua and Arica.
May 30, 1962the country and the entire world witnessed the inauguration of the VII World Soccer Championship in Chile.
Some years before, in 1957, Fernando Riera assumed the technical direction of the Chilean team. For 4 years, Riera carried out a solid training and physical preparation process, which included tours abroad and friendly matches.
This work was rewarded with the extraordinary performance of the national team throughout the championship and with the unconditional support of the Chilean public, who euphorically chanted the name of Chile at the end of the match against Yugoslavia, where the historic third place was obtained.
The unforgettable party that was lived and what the victory meant for all of Chile, made the 1962 World Cup be in the national collective unconscious as one of the most exciting moments that Chile has lived and successfully celebrated. This triumph is a source of inspiration and motivation for our athletes and for the entire country to this day.
