FAO regional representative visits Cuba

The Deputy Director General and Regional Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mario Lubetkin, began a visit to Cuba on Monday.

His stay has the objective of strengthening and consolidating the work with the Government to advance the food and nutrition security agenda, according to report of Latin Press (PL).

During his stay until Tuesday morning, Lubetkin must hold meetings with Miguel Díaz-Canel and other government authorities, as happened this morning when he met with Rodrigo Malmierca, Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment.

Lubetkin has already visited Panama, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, with an agenda that began at the 63rd edition of the Annual Meeting of the Boards of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and IDB Invest, in Panama City, says the source .

According to this report, within the framework of this meeting, the FAO representative intervened as a panelist in the seminar Building Bridges to Promote Food Security and Sustainable Energy.

The panel discussed the importance of leveraging public-private engagement to foster collaboration in improving the integration of the agri-food supply chain in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Such a debate, the note points out, not only helps vulnerable populations, but also contributes to global economic growth, and to guaranteeing food and nutritional security.

In Mexico, he later held a work agenda that included meetings with the Secretaries of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard; and Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Villalobos, on March 21.

Lubetkin also participated in the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government (SEGIB), which was held on March 24 and 25, 2023 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The 22 nations gathered adopted instruments through which Ibero-America established its position and proposed solutions to some of the main challenges facing the region.

Among these challenges is the strategy to achieve food security, which proposes, among other measures, increasing intraregional trade and the development of more resilient supply chains.

In addition, they promote the consolidation of family farming, expand access to financing to transform agri-food systems and strengthen rural digital infrastructure, the text concluded, PL points out.
