Famous but controversial, the MC's pragmatic bet for the elections

The emecistas define themselves as a “third way”, away from the government party -Morena- and from the opposition alliance (PRI, PAN, PRD). His electoral bet in the elections next June, as well as in 2023 and of course, in 2024, is to go alone, that is, “not to integrate rare and unworthy alliances.”

“Citizen Movement does not allow rare or unworthy alliances, because we are upright. Citizen Movement does not allow messiahs or pharaohs, because we are a team,” said Samuel García, governor of Nuevo León.

“Let’s not allow tribes or groups or sects: neither Jalisco Group nor Nuevo León Group nor Campeche Group. We are all Citizen Movement, we are family and we are going to win together,” said García Sepúlveda in the framework of the Democratic National Convention of MC held in December 2021.

His counterpart from Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, seconded him by specifying that “in this project we do not believe in simple alliances with the traditional parties, but we do believe in the possibility of making dialogue an opportunity to try to add different political expressions that we need to build a competitive project”.

Even Alfaro Ramírez warned that, facing the presidential election, there is no room for pettiness or personal ambitions.

electoral pragmatism

For Fernando Dworak, the Citizen Movement has included in its ranks expansive members of the Democratic and Doctrinal Forum, such as Jesús González Schmall, who in 2003 was elected federal deputy for the former Convergence party. He also added the former PRI member and former governor of Yucatan, Ivonne Ortega Pacheco, as well as the former Redistas Amalia García, former governor of Zacatecas, and Juan Cepeda, former senator and former candidate for the governorship of the State of Mexico.

This, without leaving aside the feminist and current senator, Patricia Mercado and the former head of Health and Economic Development of Mexico City, Salomón Chertorivski,

“Citizen Movement is a very pragmatic party, but that pragmatism has a clear objective: to form structures and that commitment it has made to form structures has been very differentiated in each state”, comments the political scientist.

For example, it highlights that in the 2021 elections, the former municipal president of Campeche in the period 2018-2021, Eliseo Fernández Montúfar meant a great “signing”, since he was very few votes away from taking the governorship below the morenista Layda Sansores.

The same thing happened with the mining businessman Alfredo “El Caballo” Lozoya Santillán, who entered politics in 2016, as an independent candidate for the municipal presidency of Parral, a position for which he won.

In 2020 he joined MC and for the June 2021 election, he requested a license to run as a candidate for governor of Chihuahua, in which, although he did not win, he obtained important results.

“MC has paid a lot of attention to this type of independent profiles because it is a ‘win win’, because some add structure and others, more or less proven leadership. However, in the case of Palazuelos, this new acquisition did not work for him”, highlights Dworak.
