CDMX, Mexico.- The famous Iranian actress and women’s rights activist Taraneh Alidoosti was arrested today in Iran for their social media posts supporting the protests.
“Taraneh Alidoosti was arrested for her recent actions by publishing false information and content, and for inciting chaos,” the semi-official Tasnim news agency announced, without specifying the place of detention.
Known mainly for her role in “The Salesman”, which was awarded an Oscar for best foreign language film in 2017, Taraneh had posted several messages on her Instagram condemning the violence of the Iranian authorities. Her account, which had some 8 million followers, was suspended this Sunday, presumably due to regime attacks.
On December 8, the 38-year-old actress had repudiated the execution of Mohsen Shekari, hanged after being accused of “war against God”. So far two protesters have been hanged, one of them in the middle of the street. While more than a dozen wait on death row.
Since the protests broke out four months ago over the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died in the custody of the morality police, it is estimated that the death toll exceeds 500.
“Any international organization that looks at this bloodbath without reacting represents a shame for humanity,” she had written on her Instagram profile, before she was taken away.
In June 2020, she was sentenced to five months in prison, suspended, for questioning the police on Twitter after assaulting a woman who had removed her headscarf.
Just a month ago, the actress assured that she would not leave her country, regardless of the consequences, and that she would continue to raise her voice for women’s rights.
