MADRID, Spain.- The relatives of the Cuban opponent José Daniel Ferrer, imprisoned since July 11, 2021 (11J), have not heard from him since last October 12 the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU) announced that he would start a hunger strike “as an extreme resource in demand of his freedom and rights”.
“The uncertainty overwhelms us every day without knowing how José Daniel is, if he is already on a hunger strike or if he is still surviving on the little food he had left,” said his sister Ana Belkis Ferrer, through Twitter.

On October 12, the day of his relatives’ last visit to the Mar Verde prison in Santiago de Cuba, Ferrer refused to take the food they brought him, arguing that when he ran out of what he had left, he would go on strike. of hunger “until the last consequences”.
After transcending their decision to strike, members of the European Parliament (EP) issued a statement demanding a health service for the opponent.
“We express our deep concern about the consequences of this decision that José Daniel Ferrer has had to adopt as a last resort in the face of his situation of torture and captivity. We require an adequate health service that allows us to monitor and attend to Ferrer’s state of health in a timely manner. We show our unconditional support to his wife and daughter”, manifested the document, signed by José Ramón Bauzá, member of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the EP.

José Daniel Ferrer was arrested on July 11, 2021 when he was preparing to join the popular demonstrations. They transferred him to a dungeon in the Versalles torture center, and in early August they sent him from there to the Mar Verde prison, where he has been since then and without a trial date.
During all this time the prison authorities have kept him in a cell in Inhuman conditionscruel and degrading, isolated from the prison community and subjected to repudiation rallies, despite his delicate state of health.
