CDMX, Mexico-. The fourth of September was the last time that the family of Gabriel Chavez heard from him. That day he sent them a photo from the shelter in Piedras Calientes, Mexico. The 36-year-old Cuban was very close to fulfilling his dream and set foot on American soil.
Indeed, the next day Chávez crossed the border and there they lost all communication with him.
Two months later and without news of the young man, his parents, desperate, ask for help to find him. According to the testimony they gave to Univision they followed their son’s journey from Nicaragua through an application. However, the signal places it in the same place since September 5.
In Eagle Pass, Texas, the cell phone is still active, exactly at 875 and Jefferson Street. At the time of the testimony, the device had 45% battery. Which indicates that someone has kept it charged and online.
“Let them find him, we are waiting for my son, we are waiting for him with open arms and hearts,” says Ileana, the mother of the missing Cuban. The same confusion shows Pedro, Gabriel’s father, who today has no greater concern than the whereabouts of his son and the conditions in which he finds himself.

Gabriel left Cuba for Nicaragua and after a month crossing several Central American countries, he managed to reach the northern border of Mexico. The young man disappeared at the end of his journey, which the family estimates cost about $12,000.
His father confessed to the outlet that he regrets having helped his son on this dangerous journey. It was the wait of more than four years for a family reunification that prompted him to make the journey.
During this time, his family has called various immigration detention centers, but they have not been given any information. They have been told that there are too many people being held there and they cannot carry out a specific search.
One of the last people to see him was contacted by the family in late September. The young woman told them that when they went to cross the border, the coyotes separated the women from the men. She then she didn’t see him anymore.
