Chloe Stanley is 12 years old and lives with her mother, brother and grandmother in the city of São Paulo. In February, the family managed in court the unilateral custody of the girl and, with this, the right to start hormonal blockade in the teenager, who is a trans girl. Chloe’s father does not accept his daughter’s condition. The forecast was that treatment began on August 26, under the guidance of an endocrinologist. One Resolution published this week by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) which prohibits hormonal block in minors, however, can alter family plans.
In an interview with Brazil agencyChloe’s mother, Tatiam Stanley, reports that her daughter was diagnosed with severe gender dysphoria and that the girl’s biggest fear is to start puberty and develop male characteristics.
“Suddenly we were undermined, bombarded with this news of a resolution where the CFM prohibits blockade in children. Our world collapsed. Simply a setback of years in history. Chloe is desolate with all this situation. I’m trying to get her to cheer up and hope.”
“It is not possible that there is nothing that can be done in the face of this Imposition of the CFM. They do not know what it is to experience this story, what it is to feel being someone that society does not believe exists, that imposes their truths and thinks we have to accept. Do the use of the block, ”adds Tatiam.
Tatiam warns that there is a risk of trans children and adolescents, given the ban and due to despair, seek other forms of access and use hormonal blockers, endangering the health and integrity of each of them and their families.
“Isn’t the right to health from everyone? Isn’t it a duty of the state? How do they do so, forbidding and taking a right that is ours? For us, it was unfortunate, it was bleak,” he says.
“It is an outrage to what the CFM is doing. For me, it is a monstrosity. There was no dialogue with the outpatient clinics that deal with trans children and teenagers. They did not talk to families, nothing. They just sat down, they decided for us. And we have to accept and get their arms crossed, seeing what they are doing with our children, daughters and filths? Something.
Diogo Leal lives in Florianópolis with his wife and daughter, a 9 -year -old trans girl, and brings a very similar account to Tatiam. He says that V [nome preservado a pedido da família]since childhood, has always enjoyed play different from those traditionally defined by society for boys.
“But we think, this boy and girl joke thing is invented,” he says.
It was in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, that identification with females was more intense.
“I don’t know if it was because we ended up spending more time at home and, with this privacy, she felt freer to expose. It was during this time that these changes started to happen more intensely. She, first, wanted to wear princess and superhero costumes, she was very fond of Batgirl and Elza [personagem do filme Frozen, da Disney]. From there, it was a step to start wanting to wear just girl clothes, ”he said.
With the resumption of classes in the least critical period of the pandemic, V has already returned to the school environment with the longest hair and wearing female uniform.
“In the middle of the 1st year, she decided that she wanted to be called V. She was already talking at school and had also told us. We talked to the school and everything worked out, we had no major problems. It’s a municipal public school and they agreed to use her social name,” he explained.
“It has been a process. We are always following each step. Sometimes they are silly things, like let her go to a little friend’s house. I think most parents are worried, but we get even more worried because there will be any kind of prejudice. They are very nervous. Protect it, ”he says.
At the age of 9, V approaches puberty. And the resolution of the CFM worries the girl’s family.
“Until then, parents and guardians of trans children and adolescents had the possibility, by medical follow -up, of course, from, at this stage of puberty, to enter the hormonal block. A means to stop the development of biological characteristics. In the case of my daughter, it would not be growing through the face, for example,” he explained.
“This is very important for these children and adolescents, so that they can assert themselves as they are really, how they feel. And it is also a way to protect V in a society where there is a lot of prejudice. It is worth remembering that in Brazil the life expectancy of a trans is 35 years. In a society that has so much prejudice, hormone therapy is even a form of protection. Hormonal block, ”he argues.
“This CFM measure reaches these people in two ways. The first is denying that there are trans children and adolescents, so there would be no need for hormonal block and cross hormone, only in age, from 18 years old. A denial of the meaning of existence and, therefore, all kinds of help, help, medical and psychological follow -up. And the second thing is the consequence. more”.
V’s father fears that the resolution will eventually pave the way for trans children and adolescents to be even more susceptible to transphobia.
“The index of depression and suicide attempt in the trans population in Brazil is very high in the range of children under 18, 14%, much larger than among people Cis. And this data are often underestimated, you can not capture as well as reality. I, as a father, get extremely worried,” he warns.
“My daughter is not yet taking the blockage. She is accompanied by a trans outpatient clinic, which is where we had to take the exams to see the issue of hormones and then take to doctors to see if it would be when starting the hormonal block or if we expected a little more,” explains V’s father.
“We know this is very important to her happiness, and I, as a father, and my wife, as a mother, we are very shaken and worried about how it can affect her. Not only about her happiness. My wife, for example, is devastated. She has been afraid of how our daughter can react when she gets right now and she can’t take the hormonal blockade. hormone ”.
“In the Constitution it is stated that all people have the right to health and that it is the duty of the State to provide, to guarantee this right. And this resolution that has gone against it. Denies access to rights of children and adolescents, of the trans population. Not only denies rights as the state prohibits doctors from proving the right to health for this population. It is very serious. Parent.

The CFM resolution published on April 16 prohibits hormonal block for children and adolescents with incongruity and/or gender dysphoria. The entity also establishes that cross hormone therapy – sex hormone administration to induce secondary characteristics consistent with the patient’s gender identity – can only be started from the age of 18.
Resolution also restricts access to gender reassignment surgeries for trans people before the age of 18 And in cases where the procedure implies potential sterilizing effect before 21 years.
Finally, the resolution states that trans people who maintain their biological reproductive organs should seek preventive or therapeutic medical care with biological sex experts and not according to their gender identity.
MPF
In a statement, the entity points out that the publication alters the rules that define the care and perform medical procedures offered to trans’s people, including children and adolescents.
According to the MPF, the procedure was opened from complaint made by the Mothers Association for diversity and a technical note published by Antra.
“The entities communicated the fact and demonstrated the concern of family members of children with gender variability or trans adolescents who suffer from gender dysphoria and who have access to therapeutic procedures such as Puberal block and hormone,” said the MPF.
What the CFM says
In a press conference, CFM President José Hiran Gallo stressed that the resolution was unanimously approved by the entity’s plenary.
“All 28 counselors present approved this resolution,” he said.
Gynecologist Rafael Câmara, a counselor for the state of Rio de Janeiro and one of the resolution rapporteurs, stressed that this is a topic in which evidence and facts change all the time.
“It is natural that these resolutions are changed,” he said.
In dealing with the sealing of cross hormone therapy for children under 18, he recalled that the previous CFM resolution established 16 years of age as the minimum age for the administration of sex hormones for this purpose.
“It’s not something innocuous,” he said, citing risks such as increased cardiovascular and liver disease, including cancer, reduced fertility, baldness and acne, in the case of testosterone, and thromboembolic problems and breast cancer in the case of estrogen.
About hormonal blockers, the doctor pointed out that the use of this type of therapy in order to suppress puberty in children and adolescents is a cause for frequent discussions and questions.
House recalled that in April last year, the United Kingdom abolished the use of sex blockers. According to him, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, “countries with strong and progressive health systems”, also banned therapy.

The doctor stressed that the prohibition of the use of blockers does not apply to clinical situations recognized by the medical literature in which the use is scientifically proven, including early puberty and endocrine diseases.
Chamber also cites the increase in reports of transitional regret and even sexual detention since 2020, which has led several countries to review their protocols to deal with incongruity and gender dysphoria.
Another point highlighted by the doctor deals with the overdiagnosis, especially among minors.
“More children and adolescents are being diagnosed with gender dysphoria and thus brought to treatments. Many, based on studies in the future, could not be trans, but simply gay and lesbians.”
