The National Experimental Polytechnic University (Unexpo), with its 60 years of experience in the training of future engineering professionals, has established itself as one of the most important educational institutions in Venezuela in this area.

Its academic quality and its commitment to excellence have allowed many of its graduates to become leaders in their respective fields within engineering. Yet despite his long history and reputation for academic excellence, Unexpo is currently facing a great challenge. It is about the fact of having to deal, among other things, with the deteriorated and precarious condition of its facilities, in a context in which there are not enough resources to deal with it.

Mazra Morales, administrative vice-rector of the institution, assured that many of the buildings and equipment of the university have suffered an evident deterioration over the past years, due to the lack of proper maintenance.

Morales pointed out that the roofs require urgent repairs, since no improvement has been made at a deep level for years.

«Look how you see the roof: we put pieces and cloths, but the pieces fall off because we cannot waterproof it, because it is very expensive. The laboratories also have roofs that are breaking and there we are seeing how we are repairing, “said Morales.

He stressed that the laboratories need new equipment to continue teaching the practices to the students. Some do not have the necessary clothing and are obsolete.

For his part, Carlos Linares, a professor of calculus and mathematics, has witnessed the deterioration suffered by the university in the 23 years he has been teaching classes there.

For Linares, the lack of a budget for infrastructure maintenance from the State has aggravated the situation.

The teacher pointed out that it is necessary for the State authorities to make an effort together with university authorities and civil society to invest in the renovation and modernization of the institution’s infrastructure.

Students support recovery of Unexpo

One of the outstanding actions, both by the administrative authorities and by some of the teachers, is the initiative and commitment on the part of the students, who have decided to take action on the matter and organize themselves to recover some spaces of the institution.

Eduardo Goyo, student leader of Unexpo Activa, commented that through a campaign they managed to motivate the same students to donate for the recovery of the light in the basic studies building, where they have managed to improve the lighting in the classrooms.

“We have recovered 80% of the light in the basic studies building through a campaign called Unexpo Activa, where the protagonists were the same students who took out of their pocket to pay for the lamps,” he said.

The student leader added that they have managed to improve some areas of the university and that with this they have unconditional support from everyone.

There is still much to be done, since the institution does not have transportation or a dining room.

The student leader highlighted that the dining room has not been working for approximately three to four years, as has transportation, which represents a difficult situation for those who live far from the university and must, on occasions, spend the whole day in the institution and manage.

“There are students who spend the whole day here without eating. There are some foreigners and I think they are quite brave students who are striving to build a better country and university. They are the protagonists of the recovery of the spaces here at Unexpo,” he added.

Although Unexpo presents problems with its infrastructure, it is important to note that it has an administrative, teaching and worker staff committed to the training of quality professionals.

Despite the difficulties, this team works every day to offer an excellent education and motivate students to continue on their academic path.

Undoubtedly, this joint effort is an example of perseverance and dedication in the search for quality higher education.
