Almost 2,000 fishermen in Falcón risk going near the border with Aruba to do as much fishing as they can in one day. They ask the authorities for help to address this problem with oil spills, which affect the marine fauna in the area.

The fishermen of the Falcón state, specifically those who live in the Paraguaná Peninsula, have had to sail close to the borders with Aruba to be able to work due to oil spills that affect national waters, exposing themselves to risks and problems with the Dutch authorities.

According to the portal Caribbean Chroniclesa group of 1,950 fishermen and 350 boats are those affected by at least 65 crude oil spills that have been recorded on the Golfete de Coro.

One of the injured, Dioner Aular, warned that every day they risk their boats and crew to go far away and provide support for their family because the Aruba authorities believe that they are trying to enter that territory illegally.

“We are going to fish north at 15 and 35 miles, can you imagine those depths where we have to go. My boat is currently there with four crew members and a single engine, and what I’m thinking about is that, God willing, they return to land. There are several boats that are working there because there is no fishing on this side because of the spills,” he denounced.

He pointed out that, although they give them 120 liters of fuel per boat per week, they prefer to go far away to do all the fishing they can instead of staying in the Coro area where there are no longer any species. For this reason, they call on international organizations to intercede for them and avoid problems with Aruba. In addition, he said that Venezuelan officials were asked for support but they assure that they have not received the attention they expected.

The past November 12, The Committee of Women Fishermen of the state of Falcón demanded the resignation of Delhy Echevarreneta, environmental director of the state-run PDVSA, due to the oil spills in the region that seriously affect local fishing activity.

In a video broadcast through social networks, one of the committee representatives expressed the anguish that fishing families are experiencing in the area. «We are tired, our husbands are tired of coming home with nothing to feed our children. I call on you to come and verify for yourself what we experience in this community. “We are tired of so many spills, we have had 65 spills.”
