In an interview in the Chamber of Deputies and questioned about the warnings of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, about carrying out operations against cartels on land, the legislator from National Action (PAN) explained that although Mexico and its Congress make their own decisions, this reform can give a message to other nations.
“Electoral Reform is a great opportunity to tell the United States and the entire world that we are a democratic country, that we are a country of institutions, it is a great opportunity to demonstrate that there is plurality in this country,” he said.
Measures could also be introduced to combat criminal infiltration of different governments, he said. The Electoral Reform “is a turning point, a very important point that will demonstrate if we want democracy or if we don’t want it,” he added.
The change to the electoral system will be the issue that focuses the attention of Congress in the ordinary period of the federation and it is expected that President Claudia Sheinbaum will send her initiative with proposals for changes to one of the chambers.
For this reason, López Rabadán said that it will be an opportunity to demonstrate that there is plurality in the country and for the good of the Mexican economy and millions of fellow citizens in the United States, the negotiation of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada must be taken care of.
Therefore, it is also necessary to “give a clear message: we must take care of NAFTA, we must take care of the Free Trade Agreement and we must let our trading partners know that crime is going to stop in this country,” he indicated.
“The sovereignty of our country has to be prioritized, but we must also take care, we must protect this Treaty, and one of the ways is to show that in Mexico there are solid institutions and respect for legality,” he said.
“For that we have to show them that we are going to fight criminals, that we are going to fight crime, that the cartels are not going to continue being owners of territories,” said the PAN member.
Insecurity has been exacerbated so this has to stop “and we have to show the United States and the world that we in Mexico know how to do what we do as Mexicans, and of course, we have to fight crime, but we have to fight it in our country,” he indicated.
According to her, part of the Electoral Reform must include combating illegal money in politics and “it is up to legislators to make enough laws so that organized crime is punished.”
