The Minister of Justice, Nestor Osuna, appeared in Congress at a meeting of the accidental commission that monitors the measures to counteract prison overcrowding in the country.
During his attendance, the senior official presented a curious proposal for judicial reconciliation as a restorative measure for when minor crimes are committed, such as cell phone theft.

“He feels much more restored in his rights if his cell phone is returned to him or if the aggressor has to pay for a new cell phone and also compensates him with, for example, six months of cell phone payment.. That they compensate him not only for the damage to the cell phone, but also for the pain, the anguish and the pain it caused, “explained Osuna.
“It may be that society says that this is very badly done, so let’s arrange a restoration measure, social work in accordance with what that person can do,” he added.
The Minister of Justice assured that these types of measures can be much more effective than the policy of prison sanctions for when minor offenses are committed, which could contribute a lot in terms of prison decongestion and judicial decongestion in general.
“If that restores the right of the victim, if they restore the assets that were taken from him and the aggression that they caused him and the aggressor is useful to reflect on the damage he caused and society is useful to reconcilethat can give rise to a benefit that the main sentence of deprivation of liberty”.

Minister Osuna said that this proposal has not yet been embodied in a bill, but the idea is to include it in a text that could reform justice and the prison system in Colombia.
