Face to face

The whole world was in suspense for the outcome of the five intrepid adventurers who went down to the depths of the Atlantic to observe the remains of the Titanic. We all hoped that the rescue teams had found them alive, that they had just been stuck in the wreckage of the ship, and that they would be able to rise to the surface with the last breaths of oxygen. But it was not like that. Most likely, the submersible did not resist the pressure of several tons per square centimeter that the water exerted on its walls. They say the ship imploded, a rare term for a world that knows more about explosions.

The depths of the sea still hold great mysteries for humanity, precisely because it is so complicated, risky and expensive to get there. For just a few years, millionaires have been enjoying exploring this unknown universe just for fun, but the scientific community has been doing it for decades. The big difference is that the scientists use certified submersibles, whose thick walls – made of pure titanium – have already been subjected to underwater pressures thousands of times.

The walls of the wrecked ship, instead, they combined titanium with carbon fiber, an ‘innovation’ that had not been sufficiently tested and therefore not certified. This supposed innovation was due to a need to lower costs in order to attract a greater number of millionaire adventurers. With this tragedy, the exploring spirit of the human being has suffered a setback that forces us to rethink things. Hopefully it will be done on the basis of prior knowledge. You cannot skip stages.
