Face to face

Face to face

Once again the week turned our wig around with so many stories bouncing off our watches, news on the floor and passing by and gale in the corners of nonsense. This busy sigh left behind tributes, theatrics and trials that shook the grime under the rug. Marches, processes and dances on a hectic Friday in its last throes. While Chile and Peru look at the migrants who roam their borders looking for better days, Argentina applies the new dengue vaccine and the heirs of the great García Márquez decide to publish “See you in August”, the story that Gabo had almost finished in 150 pages. Thus we arrive at a new May 1 where the workers will not have rest, although deserved, because they continue counting the days that are not enough to pay it off with hope.

And tomorrow Paraguay will go to the polls. There will be no tie, but there will be little difference. Santiago Peña and Efraín Alegre are the candidates that the polls show to win the election where 4.8 million voters vote. The first, a classic from the Colorado Party, the other, from the Liberal Party. Alegre, 60, lost in 2013 to Horacio Cartes and in 2018 he was defeated by Mario Abdo Benítez. He vows to fight corruption and argues that the ruling party model has collapsed. On the other side of the counter is Santiago Peña, from the ruling party, considered a technocrat, 44, who studied in New York and was Minister of Economy during the Cartes government. Both oppose equal marriage and the legalization of abortion. The challenge for the winner is to combat poverty, which, according to the National Institute of Statistics, reaches 24.7% of the 7.5 million inhabitants and extreme poverty is 5.6%. There is no second round and senators and representatives are also voted for. On August 15 they will assume functions.
