Face to face

Kamila Pacassi was stabbed by a system. It is true, Edwin Marco Calle repeatedly plunged the dagger that took his life. But that video repeated a thousand times in WhatsApp groups destroyed the memory of a young woman who dreamed of making a difference through education. Morbidity won over us as a society and we became distracted by commenting on the details, postponing, who knows until when, the substantive debate. Why do we allow a possessive machismo that is based on violence to impose its will?

We have lost, as a society, the critical sense and the north of human values. Yes, it is true, authorities at all levels want to dazzle us with their speeches in defense of human rights. And we congratulate them for it. We applaud them so loudly that the deafening noise caused by the clapping makes visible the miseries of a society torn by violence. That complicit noise of flattery and pats on power silences the desperate cries of those who cry out for help that does not arrive.

More laws is the promise of politicians. Could it be that, by law, the fundamental values for social coexistence can be recovered? Politicians are capable of regulating how to exercise respect, solidarity and empathy. That is what they base their power on, ordering society as they wish to guarantee their permanence. The sense of service that once illuminated the authorities is far away; The contribution of politicians in helping citizens and improving society as a whole is far away.
