While Miguel Rodríguez Orejuela seeks to collaborate with the truth, the former boss of the Medellín Cartel claims to have no interest in getting involved.

News Colombia.

Fabio Ochoa Vásquez, the former member of the Medellín Cartel, returned to Colombia this December 23 after serving a sentence for drug trafficking in the United States.

His arrival in the country took place at the El Dorado airport in Bogotá, where he was received by family and the media, marking the end of a long judicial period abroad.

However, the former drug trafficker dismissed this possibility in statements to the media:

“No, I haven’t thought about that. “I am a type of peace, but I have not thought about that,” he stated forcefully.

The concept of peace managers has been one of the tools proposed by the current government to integrate different actors who can contribute to dialogues with armed groups and clarify past events.

In this context, other former drug traffickers have expressed their interest in assuming this role.

Miguel Rodríguez Orejuela’s request

A recent case that has generated debate is that of Miguel Rodríguez Orejuela, one of the main leaders of the extinct Cali Cartel.

From his confinement in a prison in southern Florida, United States, Rodríguez Orejuela sent a letter to President Petro expressing his interest in being considered as a peace manager.

In the document, dated April 25, 2024, Rodríguez Orejuela highlights his desire to contribute to truth and reconciliation, offering details about the crimes committed during his criminal career.

At 81 years old and having served almost three decades in prison, the former boss expresses his interest in helping new generations build a better country.

“I made the decision to write these lines, convinced that the new generations deserve a better country, built on the foundations of truth with the possibility of building based on peace,” he expressed in his letter.

Despite this statement, Rodríguez Orejuela emphasized that he is not seeking revenge or revenge, and that his intention is motivated by achieving divine forgiveness. According to his letter, he plans to request a reduction of his sentence in 2025.
