The Broad Front (FA) summon the Minister of Defense, Javier Garciato the Senate commission that directly involves that portfolio, as a result of the fact that Army General Gustavo Fajardochief of the Defense Staff (Esmade), ask for friday go to retirement voluntarily.
This was confirmed to The Observer Senator Alejandro Sánchez, who is part of the Senate Defense Commission, whose members of the Front will analyze the issue this Tuesday to transfer the request to its president, Senator Guido Manini Ríos.
Differences with Minister García led the Army General to request his go to retirement. “It is serious that he asks to go into retirement, and more than that it transcends. What is pertinent is that the minister be received by the commission to know what the details are. We define invite the minister to come. It is routine and it is acceptable”Sanchez insisted.
The MPP legislator will address the issue together with Senator Mario Bergara –also a member of the commission– and Senator Sandra Lazo –its vice president–. Lazo advanced this Monday night at a press conference that the invitation to Minister García seems “pertinent”. “I think that at least it deserves an invitation to the Defense Commission,” he added.
The National Defense Commission in the Senate is also made up of Carlos Camy (National Party), Gustavo Penadés (National Party) and Germán Coutinho (Colorado Party).
Fajardo was appointed in February 2021 as chief of the Defense Staff, after his predecessor, Marcelo Montaner, went into mandatory retirement due to age. Fajardo affirmed to The Observer that the differences he had with Minister García “led to wear and tear on the relationship”.
He added that for some time he “did not share or share” the determinations applied by García.
Have 44 years of activity in which he has played various roles within the National Army. Now, he will continue in office until the Executive Power determines the relief of him.
