FA rejects situation in Nicaragua: "There are no excuses to overwhelm the freedoms of expression, association and peaceful demonstration"

The Broad Front issued a statement in which it rejects the measures adopted by the government of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua against those who oppose his government. “The condition of statelessness imposed on Nicaraguan citizens affected by these measures places them in an inadmissible situation of vulnerability and defenselessness,” the party said in a statement on Monday.

“There are no excuses to overwhelm the freedoms of expression, association and peaceful demonstration. Any limitation to them must have the guarantees of domestic law, which must not be in conflict with international law whose commitments have been assumed.“, the statement continues.

“Overcoming this complex situation requires instances and mechanisms of inclusive, responsible and productive dialogue on the basis of full validity of the freedoms and inalienable rights of people. Only in this way will the essential agreements be reached to overcome it.“added the party.

“It corresponds to the international community and our country as a member of it, to sponsor and accompany such instances and mechanisms of dialogue and agreements, rstrictly respecting the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of countries enshrined in the Charters of the United Nations and the Organization of American States, respectively“, they finished.

The attacks and criminalization of justice operators, human rights defenders and journalists in Guatemala registered an increase last year, generating a “serious democratic crisis” in the country, an NGO denounced last Thursday.

Since 2017 “we began to notice an increase in attacks that by 2022 reached the unfortunate figure of 3,574 attacks,” said Jorge Santos, coordinator of the Human Rights Defenders Protection Unit of Guatemala ( Udefegua).

Among the main attacks against justice operators, humanitarian activists, journalists, environmentalists, and indigenous people, among others, are unfounded legal complaints, defamation cases, and harassment.

According to data from Udefegua, last year they documented 1,002 complaints.
