This Friday, April 22, the Executive Secretariat of the FA issued a statement referring to the refusal of the caucus of white councilors and two red councilors not to vote on the IDB loan to the Municipality of Montevideo, for sanitation and cleaning works.
“Yesterday, the people of Montevideo from all the neighborhoods were held hostage by the electoral interests of the National Party and part of the Colorado Party. With his decision not to accompany the IDB project. Both sectors denied him the possibility of accessing more sanitation and a better environmental management system. The most vulnerable will have to wait longer to access sanitation and drainage works. At the same time, the entire city will be deprived of a substantial change in the development of public infrastructure for environmental management”, expressed the Broad Front.
On the other hand, the FA recognizes and supports the “commitment and work” carried out by the Municipality of Montevideo, led by Carolina Cosse, and the caucus of Frente Amplio mayors in the development and negotiation process of the IDB project.
The Executive Secretariat of the FA recalled that for more than a year, the authorities of the Intendancy and their technical teams developed, together with IDB technicians, “a project to finance sanitation and environmental management works.”
In this process, “public consultations with neighbors were carried out and the project was presented, discussed and negotiated with the political parties represented in the Departmental Board.”
“Despite the vocation for dialogue and the willingness to seek agreements, part of the opposition, led by the National Party caucus, decided not to support this project with the sole objective of harming the management of the Municipality of Montevideo, led by Carolina Cosse”, denounces the FA.
Break in the relationship
The leftist coalition understands that the attitude of a part of the opposition in Montevideo “breaks” the traditional form of relationship between governments and opposition both at the national and departmental levels. “This is an unprecedented attitude regarding definitions of infrastructure works that are technically planned with a State policy perspective.”
The Broad Front “will not deviate from its way of responding as an opposition where it has to be, despite the attitude of the National Party and part of the Colorado Party in Montevideo.”
In this sense, the FA ensures that “the central thing will always continue to be the people and the well-being of society.”
“We will always be willing to cooperate when it comes to state policies that seek the development of the country and the improvement of the quality of life of its inhabitants,” said the opposition.
Likewise, the Executive Secretariat assures that the refusal on the part of the opposition in Montevideo will not affect the will to change the environmental management of the Municipality of Montevideo and the development of sanitation works.
a new plan
“As comrade Carolina Cosse announced yesterday, the Municipality of Montevideo will present a new environmental management plan in the coming days. This plan will call on all the residents of the department to commit to a new way of processing waste to make Montevideo a city that is not only cleaner, but also more sustainable”, affirms the FA.
At the same time, “deep concern is expressed about how the refusal to approve the loan by the party of the president, Luis Lacalle Pou, puts in check the viability of the National Waste Management Plan that his own government promotes from the Ministry of Environment ».
“From now on we commit ourselves to collaborate to think of solutions and alternatives so that Uruguay’s environmental policy in this dimension does not fail due to the irresponsible attitude of all the mayors of the National Party and two of the Colorado Party in Montevideo”, sentenced the FA.
