From the morning of this Thursday, May 19, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche, was questioned about the economic policy promoted by the government and the economic and social situation that our country is going through.
The call to Sala was promoted by the Broad Front and the deputy Bettiana Díaz the questioner.
Within the framework of the questioning, the bench of opposition deputies expressed “their deep dissatisfaction with the explanations provided” by Arbeleche.
The Broad Front issued a statement in which it stated that the economic policy of the coalition government is focused exclusively on the fiscal result.
“We are deeply concerned about the difference between the economic and social situation described by Minister Arbeleche and the reality suffered by the great majority of our country. It is very risky that there is such a degree of divorce with reality in those responsible for carrying out economic policy, “said the FA.
Likewise, the left-wing coalition, opposed to the government, considered that the Arbeleche describes a country in which “quality jobs are massively created, in which SMEs prosper and social aid reaches those who need it in sufficient amounts, but, However, the reality is very different”.
The government responds insufficiently
“We have spent more than two years of falling wages and passivities, there are 66,000 more people in poverty than before the pandemic and the number of people on the street has increased,” the FA said.
In the same sense, the left recalled that the popular pots, which returned in 2020 to face the social emergency derived from the pandemic, “persist and increase in the neighborhoods.”
“The famous ‘spill’ does not occur, the recovery is heterogeneous and inequality is increasingly intolerable,” said the group of deputies from the Front.
The FA stated that in all countries, the economic teams “are responsible for the increase in inflation. But, in Uruguay, famine is a problem for Uruguayans, and the government responds, once again, in a totally insufficient way and exempting itself from responsibilities”.
In this sense, the front line legislators expressed their deep concern about “the course of economic policy and the deterioration of the social and productive fabric that accumulates.”
“Once again, the government showed that it did not have an agenda to promote growth and development that is up to the challenges of our times,” the FA sentenced as a result of the questioning of Arbeleche.
