EZLN denounces threats against residents by crime; asks to stop siege

The argument is that there is an agreement by organized crime and with the support of the municipal authorities of Ocosingo and the government of Chiapas, headed by Rutilio Escandón, of the Morena party, “to give legal character to the dispossession,” assured the Zapatista Army.

“These Palestinian authorities point out (…) that they have instructions from said bad governments to grant the aggressors the papers that prove their ownership of the dispossessed lands,” he indicated.

Due to the threats, the EZLN is considering canceling the 2024-2025 Meetings of Resistance and Rebellion, which would be held in the Caracol of Jerusalem. For the moment, it has decided to suspend communication about that event.

The public emergence of the EZLN occurred on January 1, 1994, the day the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) came into effect, when an indigenous group took up arms to demand ownership of the lands taken from their communities and respect for their rights.

After 12 days of clashes with the Army, which tried to suppress the rebellion, the federal government held talks with the EZLN, which led to an agreement that forces the authorities to recognize the indigenous peoples, but which was not respected.

Since then, the EZLN heads an autonomous government in different indigenous territories of Chiapas, which it calls Caracoles, and 30 years later it continues as a Zapatista movement.
