The Senate agreed yesterday to extinguish the trust created 31 years ago for the construction and equipment of its Reforma and Insurgentes headquarters, and will return the more than one billion pesos it contains to the Federation Treasury.

The president of the Chamber, Laura Itzel Castillo, ratified before the plenary session an agreement of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo), headed by Adán Augusto López Hernández, who specified that the delivery of the funds from Trust 1705 will be done in two stages: today, 800 million, and in January 2026 the remainder, of just over 250 million pesos.

In an interview, the Morena coordinator also explained that dispensing with these resources will not have an impact on the Senate’s finances next year, since they will continue with the austerity policy, so the federal government will be able to allocate those 1.5 billion pesos to emergencies, including supporting the communities of the states recently impacted by the rains. “It has to be of some use instead of that money sitting there idle.”

He insisted that, although the law allows the Senate to integrate the resources into its budget this year, they will not do so and today a first check is delivered to the Federation Treasury.

He noted that this trust was created in 1994 to purchase the land where the new headquarters would be located, it was later used for the construction of the Paseo de la Reforma building, for its equipment and, in a final modification, to acquire computer equipment.

López Hernández recalled that, in the last administration, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador decreed the elimination of all trusts. On that occasion, what was maintained with the National Bank of Works and Services (Banobras) was left safe. “We consider that the purposes for which it was created have already been fulfilled and that is why we deliver it in terms of law to the Treasury of the Federation.
