Exports of cereals, oilseeds and derivatives grew 36.9% in 2021

Corn became the main grain exported

Exports of cereals, oilseeds and by-products from the Buenos Aires port of Bahía Blanca marked a growth of 36.9% in 2021 compared to 2020, with a total volume of 13.15 million tons, led by corn shipments.

This is clear from a 2021 annual summary prepared by the Economic Studies Directorate of the Bahía Banca Cereals Exchange, in which it was highlighted that “once again, corn prevailed as the main grain exported, as a result of the effects of the drop in the Paraná River and the expansion process that has been manifested since 2017″.

The document specified that corn “remained the main product exported by the local port, representing 54.1% of the total” where shipments exceeded 7.12 million tons, 36.7% more than the previous year. .

Among the main destinations were Vietnam with 34.8% of purchases, followed by South Korea with 18.7%.

In the case of this last cereal, the main markets were Brazil, with 61.7% of total shipments; followed by Chile with 12.8%.

As for barley, from the port of Buenos Aires reported that exports had an “interannual increase of 125.6%”, with a volume of 1.05 million tons.

In the latter case, unlike previous years, the main destination was China, with 71.4% of the total, which in this way displaced Saudi Arabia from first place in the ranking, which was the main market in 2020.

While, malt in 2021 reached values ​​practically equal to those of 2020, with 294,850 tons, and in which the main destination was Brazil, with 85.1% of total shipments.

In the case of soy it was reported that bean exports showed a drop of 14.9% with a shipped volume of 1.37 million tons.

As for by-products, in 2021, 25,746 tons of oil (-68.8%), 85,982 of pellets (+10.2%) and 21,635 of flour (-62.7%) were exported from the port of Bahia.

“For beans, 54.6% went to China, followed by Egypt with 20.4%; in the case of oil, 54.4% was shipped to Iran, while the remaining 45.6% to the Emirates Arabs,” the report added.

Through the document, the Cereal Exchange also stated that in the sunflower complex “although in tonnage it is the one that contributed the least volume, it was the one that grew the most year-on-year in terms of its shipments through the port of Bahia, with a rise of 211.6%”.

“99,000 tons of sunflower oil (+253.8%) were exported, of which 30.3% went to Iran and 18.2% to India,” the report said.

Sunflower pellets reached 148,372 tons shipped (+188.7%) whose main destination was Vietnam, with 30.4%, followed by Japan with 20.1%.

Regarding the destinations of exports in general, from the port of Bahia they indicated that “despite having reduced their participation in 2021, Vietnam continued to be the main market, with 20.2% and a volume of 2.66 million tons”.

“Their demand focused on corn, representing 93.1% of their purchases,” added the document, which also specified that Brazil was in second place “with 16.7% of total shipments (2 ,20 million tons”.

Brazil’s purchases were practically focused on wheat, with 82.4% of the total, while China, which ranked third, reached a 12.3% share of total shipments with 1.62 million tons.
