The afternoon of this Thursday, August 21, Cali lived moments of panic after a strong explosion in the vicinity of the Marco Fidel Suárez Air Base, located north of the city. The outbreak, registered around 3:05 pm, shuddered several nearby sectors and generated fear among the inhabitants, who reported material damage and a rumble that was heard several kilometers away.
The authorities confirmed that it was an attack with a vehicle loaded with explosives, immediately cataloged as a terrorist act. Emergency, police, army, firefighters and relief agencies arrived at the place, which were deployed to serve the victims and cordon off the area while the security protocols were activated.
According to preliminary reports, a truck managed to detonate in front of the air base, releasing the cargo of cylinders that transported and causing an expansive wave that affected passers -by and vehicles that circulated on the road at that time.
The balance so far is at least five dead civilians, eleven people injured and six vehicles destroyed by the force of the explosion. Among the victims were pedestrians and drivers, which has generated great outrage in the city and reopens the debate on the vulnerability of urban areas in the face of this type of attacks.
During the verification work, the authorities found a second truck loaded with cylinders and tatucos parked in the vicinity of the air base. This vehicle did not reach to detonate, which avoided a tragedy of greater proportions that could have more serious impact both the population and military facilities.
