At least one person died and eight were injured due to an explosion that took place this Saturday morning (11), at a cultural center in Mazar-i-Sharif, a city in the province of Balkh, in northern Afghanistan.
The victims were participating in an event alluding to the National Journalist’s Day, which is celebrated on this day in the country. According to local police, the explosion happened after a representative of the Taliban group gave a speech and at the exact moment when a choir of children began to sing the Afghan national anthem.
The fatal victim is an agent who provided security for the event. The injured are five journalists and three Afghan children. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The explosion comes just two days after the governor of Balkh, Mohammad Dawood Muzammil, was killed in a suicide attack organized by the Islamic State terrorist group, which claimed responsibility for the attack.
Muzammil is one of the most important Taliban leaders to be assassinated since the group regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021, when US military troops left the country.
